RICE AND TUNA PIE

Rice and Tuna Pie image

I have never been a fan of tuna casserole. Don't know why? I like tuna and I like noodles, just don't like them together. This recipe makes serving tuna different, but very tasty. The rice is the crust while the tuna, cheese and egg make the filling. Reheats well in a micorwave for lunch/dinner the next day.

Time 1h5m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

2 cups rice, cooked
1 tablespoon onion, diced fine
2 tablespoons butter
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/4 teaspoon marjoram, dried
9 1/4 ounces canned tuna, drained
1 cup swiss cheese, shredded
3 eggs, beaten
1 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon dried marjoram
1 tablespoon onion, diced fine
salt and pepper
pimiento

Steps:

  • Beat together eggs, onion, butter and marjoram add to rice and mix well.
  • Press onto bottom and sides of lightly buttered 10 inch pie plate.
  • Spread tuna evenly over rice shell.
  • Combine remaining ingredients, cheese, eggs, milk, marjoram, onion, salt and pepper, pour over tuna.
  • Bake 350 degree oven for 50-55 minutes.
  • Garnish with pimentos if desired.

Tips:

  • Selecting Quality Ingredients: Opt for fresh and flavorful ingredients to create a delicious rice and tuna pie. Choose high-quality rice, such as Basmati or Jasmine, for fluffy and aromatic results. Use fresh, canned, or pre-cooked tuna for a convenient protein option.
  • Cooking the Rice: Ensure the rice is cooked properly to achieve the desired texture. Follow the package instructions for the best cooking method and water-to-rice ratio. Fluff the rice with a fork before assembling the pie to prevent clumping.
  • Seasoning the Ingredients: Don't shy away from seasoning the rice, tuna, and vegetables. Use a combination of herbs, spices, and seasonings to enhance the flavors. Consider adding diced onions, garlic, bell peppers, or carrots for added texture and taste.
  • Combining the Filling: Mix the cooked rice, tuna, vegetables, and seasonings in a large bowl. Ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed and well combined. Taste the filling and adjust the seasonings if necessary.
  • Preparing the Crust: If using a pre-made pie crust, simply roll it out and place it in a pie dish. For a homemade crust, combine flour, butter, salt, and water to form a dough. Roll out the dough and line the pie dish, trimming off any excess.
  • Assembling the Pie: Transfer the prepared filling into the pie crust and spread it evenly. Top with another layer of rolled-out pie dough or a lattice crust. Crimp the edges to seal the pie and brush with an egg wash for a golden-brown crust.
  • Baking Instructions: Bake the rice and tuna pie in a preheated oven at the recommended temperature until the crust is golden brown and the filling is heated through. The baking time may vary depending on the size and depth of the pie.

Conclusion:

Indulge in the savory and comforting flavors of a rice and tuna pie, a delightful combination of fluffy rice, tender tuna, and a crispy crust. With its versatility and adaptability, this dish can be tailored to suit various dietary preferences and taste profiles. Whether it's for a weeknight dinner, a potluck gathering, or a comforting meal on a cold day, the rice and tuna pie offers a satisfying culinary experience that will leave you longing for more.
