1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg

Tips:

  • Use yellow or white onions for the best results, as they have a milder flavor than red onions.
  • Slice the onions thinly and evenly, about 1/4 inch thick, so they cook evenly.
  • Soak the onion rings in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight. This helps tenderize the onions and prevents them from becoming greasy.
  • Use a light hand when coating the onion rings in flour, as too much flour will make them heavy and greasy.
  • Fry the onion rings in hot oil, at least 350°F, until they are golden brown and crispy. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Drain the onion rings on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  • Serve the onion rings immediately, with your favorite dipping sauce.
