RED WINE PUNCH

This is a good punch that people seem to like, even those that don't care for red wine. The prep time does not include the chill time for the punch or the freezing of the ice ring if using one. (You can also use the recipe for wine coolers.)

RED-WINE PUNCH

Provided by Jacques Pepin

Time 20m

Yield Six cups

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 sticks cinnamon, crushed into pieces
24 cloves
Skin of 2 limes, cut into about 20 strips
3 cups water
1/2 cup good-quality honey (I use chestnut tree honey)
1 bottle robust, fruity red wine (Beaujolais, Spanish Sangre de Toro, zinfandel or Cotes du Rhone)
Small wedges of lime, for garnish

Steps:

  • Place the crushed cinnamon, cloves and lime-skin strips in a saucepan with the 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover and boil gently for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside to steep for 10 minutes. Strain. (You should have about 2 1/2 cups.) While still hot, stir in the honey.
  • Combine the lukewarm syrup with the red wine and transfer the mixture to wine bottles or large glass jars. Refrigerate and serve over ice with a small wedge of lime per serving.

Tips:

  • Choose the right wine: A medium-bodied red wine without too much tannins, such as Pinot Noir, Merlot, or Zinfandel, is the best choice for a red wine punch.
  • Use fresh fruit: Fresh cranberries, oranges, and apples are the most common fruits used in red wine punch. You can also use other seasonal fruits, such as pears, pomegranates, or even frozen berries.
  • Add some spices: Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves will add a warm, festive flavor to your punch. You can also add a bit of ginger or allspice for a more complex flavor.
  • Sweeten to taste: Depending on the sweetness of the fruit and wine you are using, you may need to add some sugar or honey to sweeten your punch. Taste it as you go and adjust the sweetness to your liking.
  • Garnish with flair: A few slices of orange or apple, a cinnamon stick, or a sprig of rosemary will add a festive touch to your punch.

Conclusion:

Red wine punch is a delicious and festive drink that is perfect for any holiday or special occasion. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can easily make a red wine punch that your guests will love. So next time you're hosting a party, be sure to give red wine punch a try.
