Tips:

  • For the best flavor, use waxy potatoes like Yukon Gold or Red Bliss. These hold their shape better than starchy potatoes and create a creamy texture.
  • Slice the potatoes thinly and evenly so they cook evenly. A mandoline slicer is a great tool for this.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan when cooking the potatoes. They should be in a single layer so they can brown properly.
  • Use a heavy-bottomed skillet or Dutch oven to prevent the potatoes from burning.
  • Season the potatoes generously with salt and pepper. You can also add other seasonings like garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika.
  • Cover the potatoes while they are cooking. This will help them steam and cook more evenly.
  • Stir the potatoes occasionally to prevent them from sticking to the pan.
  • Once the potatoes are tender, remove them from the heat and stir in the cheese. Use a good quality cheese that melts well, like cheddar, Gruyère, or Parmesan.
  • Serve the scalloped potatoes immediately, while they are hot and bubbly.

Conclusion:

Red scalloped potatoes are a classic side dish that is perfect for any occasion. They are easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. With a few simple tips, you can make the perfect scalloped potatoes every time.
