BLACK-HEARTED CANDY APPLES

Black-Hearted Candy Apples image

The glossy coating of these old-fashioned candy apples is hard, not soft like the more common caramel variety. It's best to lick them like a lollipop. You can also cut into wedges with a sharp knife, but the candy coating may crack. —Agnes Ward, Stratford, Ontario

Red Candy Apple Slices image

Provided by Trisha Yearwood

Time 30m

Yield 32 candy apple slices

Number Of Ingredients 10

Cooking spray
2 cups sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
One 2-ounce box cinnamon candy
Few drops of red food coloring
Chopped peanuts
Shredded coconut
Assorted candies
2 firm apples, such as Jonathan or Fuji
2 firm Granny Smith Apples

Steps:

  • Bring a medium pot of water to a boil. Spray a cookie sheet with cooking spray. Set aside.
  • In a medium saucepan, bring the sugar, 1/2 cup water and corn syrup to a boil. Cook to 250 degrees F, or until the syrup spins a thread when poured from the edge of a cooking spoon. Pour in the candy pieces and continue cooking to 285 degrees F. Remove from the heat and add the food coloring to achieve the desired shade of red.
  • Put the chopped nuts, coconut and candies in shallow bowls. Set aside. Wash the apples thoroughly. Remove the stems from the apples and insert a popsicle stick into the center of the bottom of each apple.
  • Dip the apples quickly in the candy mixture, twisting as you dip to cover the entire apple. Roll the apples in the assorted toppings, coating the bottom half of each apple. Place on the greased cookie sheet and allow the coating to cool and harden. Remove the popsicle sticks and use an apple slicer or a sharp serrated knife to cut the apples into slices. Place a toothpick in each slice.

OLD-FASHIONED RED CANDIED APPLES

Old-Fashioned Red Candied Apples image

These are the kind you found at the circus or carnival! Not the newer version covered with cramel. ;) Candy thermometer is needed for this, as well as popsicle sticks. The number of apples needed depends on the size of the apples, probably 4 medium ones. The recipe states that each batch candies approximately 1 dozen medium apples. I'm not sure I trust that. Cook time depends on your altitude where you live, heat of your burner, and pot used. NOTE: See review by Canada Goose for helpful hints! Thanks, CG!

BLACK CANDY APPLES

These are always a hit at our Halloween parties. I make different colors than the original red (purple, black, green) and if you want to be "fancy" you can dip them first in the clear syrup, then 3/4 up in red (let cool completely in between dips) and half dip in black :) I also sprinkle them with "witch dust" ;)

CANDY APPLES

Candy apples are a classic fall dessert that family and friends are sure to love. Use your apple-picking haul to make the ultimate Halloween treat, complete with a sticky-sweet caramel coating.

Yield Makes 6 medium or 12 mini candy apples

Number Of Ingredients 6

Unsalted butter, for parchment paper
2 cups sugar
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon red food coloring, (optional)
6 medium apples, or 12 lady apples

Steps:

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; butter parchment, and set aside. In a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine sugar, 3/4 cup water, corn syrup, and food coloring, if using. Bring to a boil over high heat; reduce heat to medium-high. Insert candy thermometer and continue to boil until temperature reaches between 300 degrees and 310 degrees (hard crack stage), about 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, insert a wooden stick into the top of each apple, pushing about halfway through; set aside. When mixture reaches temperature, immediately remove from heat. Working quickly, dip apples in sugar mixture until completely coated. Transfer to prepared baking sheet; allow to cool.

Tips:

  • To make the perfect caramel coating, use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature of the sugar syrup. The mixture should reach 300°F (150°C) before removing it from the heat.
  • To ensure the apples are evenly coated, hold them by the stem and dip them into the caramel mixture, rotating as you do so. Make sure to coat the entire surface of the apple.
  • To create the classic red and black candy apple design, dip the bottom half of the apple into the red caramel mixture and the top half into the black caramel mixture. Alternatively, you can drizzle the black caramel mixture over the red caramel-coated apple for a marbled effect.
  • To add some extra flair, decorate the candy apples with sprinkles, nuts, or edible glitter before the caramel coating has set.
  • Candy apples can be stored at room temperature for up to two weeks. However, for best results, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

Conclusion:

Candy apples are a classic fall treat that are both delicious and easy to make. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create beautiful and festive candy apples that are sure to be a hit at your next party or gathering. So next time you're looking for a fun and easy dessert, give candy apples a try!
