Ultimate Breakfast Casserole image

A very fitting title for this breakfast casserole ... it truly is the ultimate. It reminds us of a breakfast bowl that has everything you love about breakfast inside and topped with creamy gravy. Hash browns are the base for the layers of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, cheese, and country gravy. When baked, the gooey cheese and...

Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 pkg diced, frozen hash browns (or you can make homemade if you prefer)
2 (rolls) lb pork sausage, mild
2 pkg bacon, maple flavored
12 large eggs, scrambled
3 c Fiesta blend cheese, finely shredded
3 pkg country milk gravy mix (do not buy cheap brands, they taste watery)
3 c water (for gravy mix)
salt and pepper

Steps:

  • 1. Mix up the water and gravy mix and start it cooking, making sure to keep stirring it to prevent lumps or scorching.
  • 2. You can deep fry the hash browns in oil until golden brown (I did this once and it turned out really well). Or in a skillet, add some butter and brown the hash browns really well. You have to cook the hash browns a little at the time to get an even browning. You could also do this in a large baking pan (you would have to just stir them to get them evenly browned).
  • 3. Scramble cook the sausage. Set it aside in a strainer, inside a bowl if possible, to strain all the grease off the sausage.
  • 4. Cook the bacon. Crumble it on a paper towel to absorb all the grease.
  • 5. Cook the scrambled eggs and set them aside.
  • 6. In a large deep dish baking pan, (I use the disposable foil pans for lasagna, works great and makes for quick and easy clean up), layer the hash browns, sprinkle a little salt and pepper to taste.
  • 7. Sprinkle a fine layer of cheese on top of the hash browns.
  • 8. Then a layer with half the scrambled eggs, sausage, and bacon. Top that with half of the gravy.
  • 9. Repeat layers and top the gravy with a layer of cheese.
  • 10. Place the casserole in the oven for about 20 minutes to melt the cheese and to bring everything together. Remove from oven and serve warm with your favorite toast, biscuit or bread.
  • 11. Or you could cover the casserole and place it in the refrigerator till the next morning. Place in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes to warm it up and melt the cheese.

Overall, this was a good breakfast casserole. It was easy to make and tasted pretty good. I would make it again, but I would probably make a few changes.

This recipe is a great starting point, but I think it could be improved with some tweaks. I would add more vegetables and maybe some different cheeses.

I'm not sure what I did wrong, but my casserole didn't come out looking anything like the picture. It was a big disappointment.

This casserole was way too cheesy for me. I could barely taste anything else.

I followed the recipe exactly, but my casserole turned out dry. I'm not sure what went wrong.

This casserole was a little bland for my taste. I think I'll add some more spices next time.

This casserole was a great way to use up leftover ham. It was flavorful and filling, and the bread cubes added a nice texture.
