The syrupy glaze on these barbecued drumsticks results in a tangy, caramelized coating. We slow-grilled the chicken over medium-low heat to prevent flare-ups from the dripping sauce. Green-Cabbage Coleslaw makes a crisp side dish.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 1/2 cups dry red wine
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons packed dark-brown sugar
1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons finely grated fresh ginger
1 garlic clove, minced
8 chicken drumsticks, skin on
Coarse salt
Green-Cabbage Coleslaw with Vinaigrette

Steps:

  • Bring wine, sugar, soy sauce, ginger, and garlic to a boil in a saucepan. Reduce heat, and simmer until mixture has thickened to the consistency of honey, 35 to 40 minutes. Let cool.
  • Using a sharp knife, make three diagonal slashes through the skin and flesh on both sides of each drumstick (this will help the flavors permeate the meat).
  • Preheat grill to medium-low. (If you are using a charcoal grill, coals are ready when you can hold your hand 5 inches above grill for just 7 seconds.) Place drumsticks on grill, and brush with sauce. Close cover, and grill 4 minutes. Flip chicken, and brush with sauce. Continue to cook, flipping and brushing with sauce every 4 to 5 minutes, until cooked through, about 20 minutes total. Season with salt. Serve with coleslaw.

These drumsticks were a disappointment. The glaze was too sweet and the chicken was dry. I won't be making this recipe again.

These drumsticks were amazing! The glaze was perfectly balanced between sweet and savory, and the chicken was cooked to perfection. I'll definitely be adding this recipe to my regular rotation.

Overall, these drumsticks were pretty good. The glaze was flavorful and the chicken was cooked well. I might try experimenting with different glazes next time to see what I like best.

These drumsticks were a bit dry, but the glaze was delicious. I think I'll try brining the chicken next time to see if that helps.

The glaze on these drumsticks was a bit too thick for my liking, but the chicken itself was cooked perfectly. I might try using a thinner glaze next time.

I found that the drumsticks took a bit longer to cook than the recipe stated, but they were worth the wait! The glaze was delicious and the chicken was very juicy. I'll definitely be making these again.

I've tried many grilled drumstick recipes, but this one is by far the best. The combination of the sweet and sticky glaze with the smoky flavor of the grill is irresistible! Highly recommend!

These drumsticks were a hit at my last BBQ! The glaze was perfectly sweet and sticky, and the chicken was fall-off-the-bone tender. I'll definitely be making these again.
