Spiced Fruited Hot Cross Buns image

"Who says you should only eat Hot Cross Buns in April?" asks Alina Niemi of Honolulu Hawaii. "The bread machine does all the hard work, so they make an easy and decadent holiday treat that tastes like you put a lot of effort into them."

Provided by Taste of Home

Time 1h

Yield 2 dozen.

Number Of Ingredients 19

1-1/2 cups fat-free milk (70° to 80°)
1/4 cup water (70° to 80°)
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons ground flaxseed
1 tablespoon grated orange zest

1/2 cup golden raisins
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1/4 cup chopped crystallized ginger
ICING:
3/4 cup confectioners' sugar
3/4 teaspoon grated orange zest
2 to 3 teaspoons lemon juice

Steps:

  • In bread machine pan, place the first 14 ingredients in order suggested by manufacturer. Just before the final kneading (your machine may audibly signal this), add the raisins, cranberries and candied ginger., When cycle is completed, turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Divide into 24 portions; shape each into a ball. Place 2 in. apart on baking sheets coated with cooking spray. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 40 minutes., Bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pans to wire racks. Combine the icing ingredients; pipe an "X" on each bun.

These hot cross buns were absolutely delicious! The dough was so soft and fluffy, and the spices gave them a lovely warm flavor. The glaze added a perfect touch of sweetness and crunch. I will definitely be making these again for Easter.

These buns were a bit too sweet for my taste. I think I might try using less sugar next time, or maybe adding a bit more spice. Otherwise, they were good. They were soft and fluffy, and the glaze was nice and shiny.

These buns were a bit dry for my taste. I think I might try using a different type of flour next time, or maybe adding a bit more liquid to the dough. The flavor was good though, and the glaze was nice and sweet.

Not a fan of the glaze on these buns. It was too thick and sticky for my taste. Otherwise, the buns themselves were good. They were soft and fluffy, and the spices gave them a nice flavor. I might try making them again without the glaze next time.

These buns were a bit too dense for my taste, but the flavor was good. I think I might try using a different type of flour next time, or maybe adding a bit more liquid to the dough. Overall, not bad, but not my favorite.
