Sesame Seed Cookies image

Growing up I was Greek Orthodox. When a member of the church or loved one of a member of the church had passed away, it was custom to make these cookies. Trays of these cookies were brought and family members stood behind tables as you went from table to table giving condolences to the family members and taking a cookie....

Number Of Ingredients 9

1/2 c sugar
1 bottle anise extract
1 dash(es) of salt
3-4 Tbsp ground anise seed
2 Tbsp baking powder
6-7 c flour
6 large eggs
1 1/2 c oil
sesame seeds, untoasted

Steps:

  • 1. Combine the sugar, salt, anise & baking powder.
  • 2. Add the anise extract, eggs & flour. Mix well.
  • 3. Add 6 cups of flour first to make a soft pliable dough. If needed add more flour 1/4 cup at a time.
  • 4. Scoop out 1/4 cup fulls.
  • 5. Roll each about 6"-7" long.
  • 6. Pinch edges to make a nice donut shape.
  • 7. Dip the tops of each one into sesame seeds.
  • 8. Place on ungreased baking sheet about 2" apart.
  • 9. Bake at 350' for about 6 minutes for a soft cookie or longer for a crispy cookie.
  • 10. ***If you don't want to go through the step of making them into doughnut shape, simply take the 1/4 cup fulls of dough. Roll into ball. Flatten slightly with a glass then dip in sesame seeds.

These cookies are a bit too sweet for my taste, but I still enjoyed them. I might try reducing the amount of sugar next time.

I'm not sure what I did wrong, but these cookies were a complete disaster. They were burnt on the outside and raw on the inside.

I followed the recipe exactly and the cookies turned out terrible. They were flat and hard. I'm not sure what went wrong.

These cookies were a disappointment. They were dry and crumbly, and the sesame seeds didn't add much flavor.
