Number Of Ingredients 9

2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
2 Tbsp baking powder
2 Tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1/2 cup oil
2/3 cup milk
2 lb hot sausage

Steps:

  • Combine dry ingredients. Stir in oil until mixture resembles course crumbs. Add milk and stir until mixture forms a ball. Roll half of dough into 10"x18" rectangle. Spread with 1 lb sausage. Roll up as for jelly roll. Wrap in wax paper or plastic wrap. Repeat with remaining dough and sausage. Chill for several hours. (I sometimes will freeze the dough at this point if I'm making them ahead. Or partially freeze it to make the roll easier to cut.) Slice rolls into 1/4" rounds. Bake on ungreased baking sheet in 350 degree oven for 15 minutes, until slightly browned. Serve warm, but not hot.

The sausage swirls were a bit too greasy for my liking. I think I would have liked them better if they had been baked instead of fried.

These sausage swirls were a little dry. I think I would have liked them better if I had added some more sauce to the sausage filling.

The sausage swirls were a bit too salty for my taste. I think I would have liked them better if I had used less salt in the sausage filling.
