This is one of my son's--who is very picky even at age 21!--favorite snacks. I use any kind of apple I happen to have but we prefer macintosh or haralson.

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 c butter, room temperature
1 c sugar
1/2 c brown sugar
2 eggs
2 1/2 c flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
1 c chopped apples
1 c buttermilk
TOPPING
1/2 c sugar
1 tsp cinnamon

Steps:

  • 1. Grease 9 X 13 pan. Preheat oven to 325.
  • 2. Cream together butter and sugars. Add remaining ingredients. Sprinkle topping over batter. (Stick a toothpick or tester down into top in several places so it won't just form a crust and not bake through.)
  • 3. Bake 35-40 minutes.

I'm not sure what I did wrong, but my cake didn't turn out at all like the picture. It was dense and gummy.

I found this cake to be a bit bland. It needed more spices or something to give it more flavor.
