Pennsylvania Dutch Soft Pretzels image

Don't let the pretzel-making process intimidate you. It's easy and they turn out delicious. They are a soft baked pretzel and while the shape may not be perfect, but they're fun to make. The pretzels bake until slightly crisp on the outside while staying soft and chewy on the inside. Serve with a little German mustard or nacho...

Number Of Ingredients 9

4 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
1 1/2 c warm water
1 tsp salt
4 c bread flour or artisan flour
1/2 c additional bread flour
SODA SOLUTION
1/2 c warm water
2 tsp baking soda
pretzel salt

Steps:

  • 1. Dissolve yeast in water.
  • 2. Add salt and flour to a bowl. Add dissolved yeast. Mix together.
  • 3. Add some flour to the counter. Knead dough until smooth.
  • 4. Cover with a cloth and let rise 15 minutes.
  • 5. Divide dough into 16 portions.
  • 6. Roll each piece into narrow rolls.
  • 7. Shape pretzel dough.
  • 8. Dip each piece in soda solution.
  • 9. Sprinkle with salt.
  • 10. Place on a greased cookie sheet.
  • 11. Bake at 450 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes. Start to watch the pretzels at 15 minutes to prevent burning.
