Old Fashioned Vinegar Taffy image

It's a "handed down" recipe that I got 20 years ago....You can add a few drops of food coloring or substitute another flavor extract (or both) for different colors/flavors...

Categories     Low Protein

Yield 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

3 cups sugar
1/2 cup vinegar
1 cup water
1/8 cup butter (2 Tablespoons) or 1/8 cup margarine (2 Tablespoons)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Mix sugar, vinegar, and water in a medium saucepan; stir well before putting on the stove. Cook over low heat about 8 to 10 minutes until it reaches (228F) the softball stage.
  • Add butter or margarine and vanilla.
  • Pour the mixture into a buttered platter and let it cool enough so you can handle it. Butter your hands well (important! keep enough butter on your hands otherwise you'll stick), pick up the blob and begin to pull it. The more you pull the whiter it gets.
  • When it has reached the right consistency, cut into small pieces with a pair of scissors (easier to use for this than a knife.)

This taffy is a bit too chewy for my taste, but I think it would be perfect for people who like chewy candy.

This taffy is a great way to use up leftover candy canes. I always have a few candy canes left over after Christmas, so this is a great way to use them up.

I'm not sure what I did wrong, but my taffy turned out really hard. I think I might have cooked it for too long.

I had some trouble getting the taffy to the right consistency. It was a bit too runny at first, but I eventually got it right.

This taffy is a bit too sweet for my taste, but I think it would be perfect for kids.

This recipe is a great way to use up leftover vinegar. I always have a bottle of vinegar in my pantry, so it's nice to have a recipe that uses it up.
