Steps:
- CRUST Mix butter, shortening and brown sugar thoroughly, the sift together flour, soda and salt and stir into the mixture. FILLING Cook dates sugar and water over low heat stirring constantly until it thickens (aprox. 10 minutes) and let cool. PREPARING FOR BAKE Preheat the oven to 400. Place half of the crumb mixture into a greased 13x9 baking pan. Press and flatten to cover the bottom of the pan. Then spread the date filling mixture which has cooled over the bottom crumb. Using the remaining crumb mixture cover the filling, patting it lightly. Place in oven and bake at 400 for 25-30 minutes until lightly browned. When warm cut into bars and remove from pan.
