Yield 3 kolachis

Number Of Ingredients 17

Kolachi Dough -
4 1/2 cups of flour
2 tbs. sugar
2 cakes of yeast, crumbled
1 3/4 cups of butter
1 cup of milk
6 egg yolks (save whites for the filling)
Nut Filling
6 egg whites mixed (not whipped)
2 cups sugar
1 lb. walnuts ground (aunt peggy uses a bit more)
1 tsp. vanilla
Poppy Seed Filling
1 lb. poppy seeds
2 cups sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla

Steps:

  • Kolachi dough - Combine flour, yeast and sugar. Cut in butter as you would for pie dough. Combine milk and egg yolks and add to flour. Mix well until dough draws away from bowl. Divide into 3 parts (or 6 parts if you like them a little smaller). Wrap in plastic and refrigerate overnight. The next day: Make the filling by mixing the filling ingredients. Roll out dough on a floured surface to rectangles, 1/8 inch thick. Spread filling and roll up like jelly rolls. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Let rise 1 hour. Bake at 350 for 40-50 minutes.
