Green Tomato Casserole- Old Fashioned Savory Pie image

This is a very old recipe that my Grandmother had saved. I only remember her making this a few times. As a kid I didn't like it. But now I sure do. Green tomatoes are just awesome! And this recipe makes them even better.

Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 8

8 large green tomatoes
3 Tbsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper (or to taste)
1/2 c butter
1 c dry bread crumbs
1 tube crackers, like ritz brand

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 325 degres. Slice tomatoes about 1/2 inch thick and layer the slices in a buttered glass baking dish. Sprinkle tomatoes with lemon juice, then brown sugar and salt and pepper. In a medium skillet melt butter. Mix the bread crumbs and cracker crumbs together in the pan with the butter. Stir constantly and to mix and lightly brown the crumbs. I followed the recipe exactly and the casserole turned out watery. I think I might have used too much milk.
