Grated Coconut Candy (Tablet Kokoye Graje) image

This is another version of the Coconut Candy. Only difference with this version is that the candy will have a nice ivory color instead of the dark brown color since granulated sugar is used instead of brown sugar. You'll find this version of the coconut candy to be as delicious. Will have pics up soon! Enjoy!

Time 55m

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 c granulated sugar
1 c evaporated milk
14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
1 pinch of salt
1 pinch of ground cinnamon or 1 cinnamon stick
2 c packed freshly grated coconut

Steps:

  • 1. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Set aside
  • 2. Mix sugar and evaporated milk in heavy 3-quart saucepan. Mix in condensed milk, salt, cinnamon, and grated coconut. Bring to a boil over high heat.
  • 3. Reduce heat to medium and cook for 40 minutes, stirring and scraping the bottom of the pan often during the first 25 minutes, then constantly during the last 5 minutes to prevent scorching. The mixture should be very thick, and should turn a beautiful ivory color. Do not let caramelize.
  • 4. Remove from heat. Drop by tablespoons on prepared baking sheet. Cool at room temperature. Will keep one week in an airtight container. Yields about 30 (Tablet Graje)

I'm not sure if I can find jaggery in my local grocery store. I might have to substitute another sweetener.

This recipe seems like it would be very sweet. I might try reducing the amount of jaggery.

I'm not sure how the grated coconut will hold together in the candy, but I'm willing to give it a try.

I'm not usually a fan of coconut desserts, but this one was surprisingly good. The coconut flavor was subtle and not overpowering, and the jaggery added a nice sweetness.
