Grandma's Old Fashioned Raisins Cake image

No cake mix here,,, for Gram's, she starts from scratch.She always brought this cake to picnics and BBQ,s- This cake keeps well for weeks she says- but we have no way of telling for sure- it always disappears the same day! lol!

ORIGINAL CAKE RECIPE:
1 lb salt pork
1 pt boiling water
4 c granulated sugar
1/2 c molasses
1 large egg
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp each-nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves
6 c all purpose flour, sifted
1 c raisins

Steps:

  • 1. Grind salt pork(all fat) Pour boiling water over and let stand till lukewarm. Stir in sugar, molasses, egg, soda and spices. Add flour and raisins. Mix well. Pour in well greased tube or deep loaf pans. Bake in 300^ oven for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or till tested done. --- Easy Method: Reduce water to 1 cup For the salt pork -substitute 1 cup shortening 1 teas. salt 9 oz. condensed mincemeat and prepare with remaining ingredients above Follow according to directions above for baking.
