Grandma's Christmas Spice Cutouts image

My great-grandmother made these, and the tradition was passed down in the family-without a written recipe! My mother would always start them the day after Thanksgiving, which was exciting for us kids, as we knew Christmas wasn't far off. They are easy to decorate with family; my grandchildren always look forward to them.-Elaine Phelps, Cornell, Wisconsin

Overall, I thought these cookies were just okay. They weren't bad, but they weren't anything special either.

These cookies are a bit too crumbly for my taste. I had to be careful not to break them when I was decorating them.

I'm not a fan of the royal icing that's used to decorate these cookies. I think it's too sweet and it makes the cookies too messy to eat.

These cookies are a great way to use up leftover spices. I always have a bunch of spices left over from the holidays, so it's nice to have a recipe that uses them up.

The cookies didn't spread out as much as I expected, so they were a bit thicker than I wanted.

I had a hard time getting the dough to roll out without it sticking to my rolling pin. I ended up having to flour the dough and my rolling pin several times.
