This recipe was sent to me by my cousin Shirley in Florida. We both fondly remember grandmas wonderful apple squares. The bakerys sell it with a thick powdered sugar frosting...but not grandma.! She served it occasionally with a cinnamon syrup and ice cream! With six siblings in my family, it did not last long. Nancy..7/9/12

3-3/4 c flour
1-1/2 tsp salt
3/4 c shortening
3 c eggs, beaten
1/3 c milk
8 c granny smith baking apples, peeled,and sliced
1-1/2 c sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1 c crushed cornflakes
1 egg white

Steps:

  • 1. In a bowl combine flour and salt. Cut in shertening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add eggs and milk, mix to form dough. Chiull for 20 minutes. Divide dough in half, roll one half to fit the bottom of a 15x10 inch baking pan..Arrange apples over crust. Combine sugar, cinnamonn, nutmeg and corn flakes, sprinkle over apples. Roll out remaing dough to fit on top of apples. Seal edges, cut slits in top, brush with beaten egg white. Bake at 400 for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Makes 16- 20 servings.
