Grandma Hetland's Molasses Cookies image

These were some of my favorite cookies when I was a little girl. This recipe actually comes from my Grandma Hetland's mom. She came from the Egeland family. Very Norwegian.

Number Of Ingredients 8

3/4 c dark molasses
1 c sugar
1 c shortening
1 egg
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 c flour

Steps:

  • 1. Blend molasses, sugar and shortening. Add egg and spices. mix until combined then add flour.
  • 2. My grandmother did not give a measurement for flour. So I estimated. Her exact words, "put in enough flour to handle and make into balls. Keep the dough soft."
  • 3. Make into balls, press with a glass and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 350* for 10 minutes.

These cookies are a bit too sweet for my taste, but they're still pretty good.

I'm not a big fan of molasses cookies, but these were surprisingly good. They're soft and chewy, with a nice molasses flavor.

Not a fan of molasses, so I substituted honey instead. They still turned out great!

These cookies are so nostalgic! They remind me of the ones my grandma used to make. They're soft, chewy, and have the perfect amount of spice.

I followed the recipe exactly but my cookies came out dry and crumbly. Not sure what went wrong.

These cookies were a bit too molasses-y for my taste, but my husband loved them.

These cookies are a hit! They came out soft and chewy, with just the right amount of sweetness. The molasses flavor is prominent but not overpowering. I'll definitely be making these again.
