Fireside Pies image

I thought I would post this recipe for a group that I joined on "Just a Pinch" called "Camping Recipes and Ways you Can Cook Them". This is Camp Debelak (my parents camp) in Cooks Forest, PA and is very woodsy and beautiful there. The whole family enjoys their time camping. Especially the grandkids love to spend time with Papa...

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 beautiful hot fire
1 loaf of bread
1 jar(s) strawberry jam or any flavor you like
1 jar(s) blueberry jam
1 pkg sliced pepperoni's
1 pkg sliced cheese
1 stick butter
1 hobo cast-iron pie iron
what about ham & swiss fireside pie; sounds like a good one too.

Steps:

  • 1. Need one good camp fire.
  • 2. For as many as you would like to serve, butter bread on one side. Then, begin filling your breads. For fruit pies use your jellies and for your pizza pies use your pepperoni and cheese. You can be creative and make any sandwich you want.
  • 3. These are the sammies that my Dad makes for the adults and kids at camp.
  • 4. He loves making them for everyone and helping make smores too.
  • 5. (The Hobo cast-iron pie iron can be bought online at Cabela's if you cannot find it in a hardware store.)

Overall, I thought these pies were just okay. I wouldn't make them again.

The pies were a bit too dry. I would recommend adding some more liquid to the filling.

The pies were a bit bland. I would recommend adding some more spices to the filling.

The pies were a bit too greasy for my liking. I would recommend draining the chicken or beef before adding it to the filling.

I found that the pies were a bit too salty for my taste. I would recommend using less salt in the filling.

These pies are a bit time-consuming to make, but they're definitely worth the effort.

I used a sharp cheddar cheese for the filling, but you could use any type of cheese that you like.

I'm not a big fan of mushrooms, so I omitted them from the filling. The pies were still delicious!

These pies are a great way to get kids involved in the kitchen. They can help you measure the ingredients, mix the filling, and even decorate the pies.

These pies are also great for freezing. Just bake them according to the directions, then let them cool completely and freeze them in an airtight container.

I used a store-bought pie crust to save time, but you can certainly make your own if you prefer.

I added some chopped vegetables to the filling for extra flavor and nutrition.

These pies are a great way to use up leftover chicken or beef.

I love that these pies can be made ahead of time. It's so convenient to be able to just pop them in the oven when I'm ready to eat.

These fireside pies were an absolute hit with my family! The filling was flavorful and the crust was perfectly golden and flaky. They were so easy to make, too. I'll definitely be making these again soon.
