Deep Fried Mushrooms: Battered & Crumbed image

These little delights are so delicious, you'll be surprised how many you can eat! Serve as a snack with a yummy dip or as a side to enhance your meal. I normally make this for me and my sister to snack on while we watch the football, and I'll admit we have been known to make a second batch before its even close to halftime!...

Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 10

250-400 g white button mushrooms
1 c flour
1/2 c cornflour/starch
1 tsp salt
1 c water
2 c breadcrumbs (panko is best for this)
2-3 c vegetable oil for deep frying (im just guessing the quantity!)
OPTIONAL
2 tsp baking powder (i forgot to include this earlier because i dont usually add it, but can give your mushrooms a nice round look if thats what you like. doesnt make a difference for me)
Addtional some people find this coating bland so if you're worried about it add some herbs or spices. i love it how it is.

Steps:

  • 1. Heat oil to 190 degrees Celcius
  • 2. Mix dry ingredients (except breadcrumbs) in a bowl and add water to make the batter (pancake consistency or close to it)
  • 3. Using a fork or skewer, dip mushroom in batter and let excess drip off. I usually do a few at a time and lean them against the bowl until all the excess has finished dripping off.
  • 4. Coat the battered mushroom in breadcrumbs and fry until golden.
  • 5. Drain on paper towels and let stand for a few minutes as the mushroom will be piping hot inside. Season with salt & pepper as desired.
  • 6. Serve as a side or as a snack.

The mushrooms were a bit soggy. I think I'll try frying them for a shorter amount of time next time.

I used panko breadcrumbs instead of regular breadcrumbs and they added a nice crunch. The mushrooms were a hit at my dinner party.
