Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Dissolve 1 teaspoon soda in 1 cup of hot water. Pour over 1 cup chopped dates and let cool. To 1 cup sugar and 5 tablespoons of melted butter, add one beaten egg, the dates, and 1 cup of chopped nuts. Add 1 1/2 cups flour and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. (editors note: I think I add the flour and vanilla to the sugar, butter and egg and then add dates and nuts). Mix lumpily (also editor's note). Bake in greased pan for 30 minutes at 350. Sauce: Combine 4 tablespoons butter, 3/4 cup dark karo syrup, and 1 1/2 cup brown sugar in a saucepan. Cook mixture to soft ball stage and let cool. Then add 1 cup carnation canned milk. Serve pudding warm with warm sauce spooned over it.
