4 large russet potatoes sliced into 1/4 inch slices
1 onion sliced into rings
3 Tbsp butter
3 Tbsp flour
1/2 tsp salt
2 c milk
1 1/2 c cheese, grated
salt and pepper to taste

  • 1. 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Butter a 1 quart casserole dish. 2. Layer 1/2 of the potatoes into bottom of the prepared casserole dish. This recipe is a bit time-consuming, but it's worth it. The potatoes are so creamy and cheesy, and the breadcrumb topping is perfectly crispy.

I'm not a fan of cheese, so I made this recipe without it. It was still delicious. The potatoes were creamy and flavorful, and the breadcrumb topping added a nice crunch.

I'm on a low-carb diet, so I used cauliflower instead of potatoes. It turned out surprisingly well. The cauliflower was still creamy and cheesy, and the breadcrumb topping added a nice crunch.

I used chicken broth instead of milk in the cheese sauce and it turned out great. It gave the sauce a nice savory flavor.

I'm not a huge fan of nutmeg, so I omitted it from the recipe. The potatoes were still delicious without it.

I used a blend of sharp cheddar and Gruyère cheese for the cheese sauce and it was so flavorful. I highly recommend using a good quality cheese for this recipe.

I used Yukon Gold potatoes for this recipe and they turned out great. They held their shape well and didn't get too mushy.
