Country Style Green Beans, Ham & New Potatoes image

Everyone has their own recipe for cooking fresh green beans and this is mine. It's a little kicked up and a lot delicious. I know you'll love it.

Categories     Vegetables

Time 3h15m

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 large bunch of fresh green beans, cleaned and snapped
1 large onion, halved and sliced thin
1 bunch green onions, sliced thin
1 medium green bell pepper, chopped
1 Tbsp bacon grease
3-4 c chicken stock
1/4 c beer (or more to taste)
1/2 lb ham seasoning
1 Tbsp dried parsley
1-2 tsp creole seasoning
1 Tbsp fresh ground black pepper
1 tsp salt
8-10 small new potatoes, washed

Steps:

  • 1. In a large soup pot add all ingredients except potatoes - heat over medium heat until it comes to a boil. You want to have enough liquid to just barely cover the beans. Reduce heat and simmer another 2 - 3 hours.
  • 2. Check for seasoning and adjust as needed. If it tastes a little salty it's OK, the potatoes will soak some of that up. The beans should be very tender and beginning to fall apart.
  • 3. Add the new potatoes and push them down into the beans so that they're covered with liquid. If more liquid is needed add more chicken stock or water.
  • 4. Raise heat to medium and bring liquid to a boil - cover and boil for 20 minutes or until potatoes are done. Taste again and adjust seasoning as needed. Enjoy!
  • 5. NOTES: The beer and the bacon grease make all the difference in the taste so don't leave that out.

This recipe was a disaster. The green beans were overcooked and the ham was tough. I would not recommend this recipe to anyone.

Not bad at all, took me about 20 mins longer than the recipe called for, other than that the whole family seemed to enjoy this one!

Oh my goodness these green beans are delicious! I've been looking for a new way to spice up my green beans and this is perfect. The ham and new potatoes add such a great flavor. I'll definitely be adding this recipe to my regular rotation.
