Cong Xiang Yuan Bai Cai (

Taken from Ji Pin Su Shi (Best Vegetable Dishes), a 30-cent, 5-in-square, paperback cookbook from Wal-Mart in China. Simple, home-style Chinese fare. Chinese cooks are expected to determine the proportions of condiments and seasonings. Everything is "ge shi liang"--to taste. I've suggested amounts, but if they don't seem right, just trust your own tastebuds.

This recipe is good, but a little bit time-consuming. I had to spend quite some time on slicing the onion and cabbage.

I'm not sure if I did something wrong, because my dish was quite dry and bland... Maybe I should try again.

The taste was too bland for me, so I added some extra seasonings like oyster sauce, soy sauce and chili flakes. It's so easy to customize the flavor!

I've made this dish many times, some were successful and some were not. I realized that the key is to not overcook the cabbage, otherwise it will become soggy and lose its crunch.
