COLONIAL BROWN BREAD

Colonial Brown Bread image

This is more of a 'dessert" bread. It's from the same little cookbook in which I found the Marshmallow Puffs (#79024) - Breads, Breads and more Breads, copyright 1983, by the Pillsbury Company. Lumps of brown sugar make dark spots in the bread. It's simple to make, and may be served warm or cold. Note - I did not have any buttermilk on hand, so I used the vinegar/milk substitution.

This bread is a bit dense, but I still enjoyed it. I think it would be good for making French toast or bread pudding.

I'm not a huge fan of molasses, but this bread was still really good. The flavor is subtle and not overpowering. I also liked that it's a relatively healthy bread, with whole wheat flour and cornmeal.

This bread is a great way to learn about colonial history. My kids loved helping me make it, and we had a lot of fun talking about the different ingredients and how they were used in the past.
