This was my mothers recipe and a favorite of our family. My children, nieces, and nephews still use this recipe today. It has always been a family reunion favorite.

Steps:
- 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- 2. Blend sugar and shortening in large mixing bowl.
- 3. add eggs, milk, and vanilla. mix well
- 4. In another bowl mix flour, cloves, nutmeg, salt, and soda.
- 5. Add wet mixture to dry mixture.
- 6. Dissolve soda and cocoa into water then add to mixture.
- 7. Add raisins and nuts
- 8. Grease and flour 9 by 13 cake pan.
- 9. Pour batter into cake pan. Tap bottom of cake pan gently on counter to release excess bubbles.
- 10. Bake on 350 degrees for 45 minutes
