I got this recipe from a Canadian TV program out of Nova Scotia over 50 years ago. It has been a family favorite for years. This cake is so moist and delicious and easy to make. Even if you think you don't like dates, you need to try this. You will want to make it again!

Steps:
- 1. Pour boiling water over dates and set aside to cool.
- 2. Cream together sugar, shortening, eggs and vanilla
- 3. Sift all dry ingredients together. Then add dry ingredients and date/water mixture to creamed mixture. Mix well. Pour into greased and floured 9 x 13 pan.
- 4. Sprinkle chocolate chips and chopped nuts over top. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes.
