Tired of chili? Want something sweet and savory that will stick to your ribs? Or do you just want something that tastes good? This recipe is my husbands favorite. He ALWAYS has me double or triple it so there are leftovers for a few days. My son loves it too and asks for it on a regular basis as well. You can make this with maple...

Time 1h15m

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 lb ground beef or turkey
1 lb bacon
1 can(s) kidney beans
1 can(s) butter beans
1 can(s) pork and beans
1 chopped onion
3/4 c brown sugar
3/4 c catsup
2 Tbsp vinegar
1/2 pkg little smokies, cut on the diagonal, optional
garlic salt with parsley and pepper

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Chop bacon and cook until almost done then add beef and onions seasoned with garlic and pepper. Cook until done. Drain.
  • 2. Add beans and remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into a casserole dish and cook uncovered for 40-45 min depending on your oven. You're just heating it clear through since everything is cooked but it also thickens as well during cooking time. .
  • 3. ****I almost always double or triple the recipe. If you do, increase the cooking time to 1 hour at least to make sure it heats through.**** The photo is a triple batch, made with honey maple bacon before being baked. I prepped it in a stock pot and went ahead and baked it right in it as well, for one hour.

I've never made calico beans before, but this recipe was easy to follow and the beans turned out perfectly. I loved the addition of the bacon and ham. I will definitely be making this recipe again.

These beans were a bit too spicy for my taste, but my husband loved them. I will definitely be making them again, but I'll use less chili powder next time.
