CALICO BEANS image

My hobby is collecting vintage recipes. I've been doing it for several years now and I have over 200...some from 1930. This recipe was in my collection. I've seen adaptations of it, people adding and deleting as the years have gone on. But, I stay with the original recipe. These beans are a meal in itself which is probably...

Time 1h20m

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 regular sized can pork and beans
1 can butter beans
1 can kidney beans
1/2 lb lean burger or ground sirloin
1/2 lb sliced bacon, diced
1 c chopped onion
1/2 c open pit barbecue sauce, original flavor, no substitutions
1/2 c ketchup
1/2 c sugar
1/2 c packed brown sugar
2 Tbsp prepared mustard
2 Tbsp molasses
1/2 tsp chili powder
pepper to taste

Steps:

  • 1. In a large skillet, cook bacon, beef, and onion until browned. Transfer to a large bowl. Do not drain. Add remaining ingredients and stir well. Turn out into a greased 9x13 baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil. Bake 350 degrees for 50 minutes...until bubbly.
  • 2. NOTE: Easily doubled. However, just add 1T more of molasses and prepared mustard instead of doubling those. Use a lasagna pan which holds a doubled recipe nicely.
