Black Forest French Toast image

Thinking of Valentine's Day & different things I could make that I love is what inspired this dish. Black Forest Cake is brilliant & very enchanting to me. I love the deep colors of chocolate and cherries; not to mention, the flavors together are amazing! One of my favorite sweet breakfast treats is French Toast so why not try to...

BLACK FOREST FRENCH TOAST
2 slice challah bread, sliced thick
2 medium eggs
2 - 3 Tbsp half and half, or milk
4 - 6 Tbsp truvia or sugar, approx
2 - 3 Tbsp hersheys cocoa, unsweetened approx
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamon, ground
1 pinch of salt
2 - 3 Tbsp cream cheese, or whipped cream cheese
TOPPING FOR FRENCH TOAST
1 bottle hershey's special dark chocolate syrup
1 small jar of sour cherry preserves or sour cherry jam
1 small jar of griottines (cherries in kirsch)
1 can(s) whipped cream
1/4 c semi-sweet chocolate chips, approx

Steps:

  • 1. Get a fairly large size bowl to prepare mixture for dipping toast in. Add your egg and whisk them. Then add half & half, vanilla, cinnamon, stevia and Hersheys cocoa. Whisk these all together. It will take a bit of whisking to incorporate the chocolate but it will after a few minutes. You can use a deeper bowl than I did so you don't get chocolate everywhere like me. hehe (Preheat oven to 350 or use toaster oven.)
  • 2. Heat oil or butter in a pan. Now take one slice of bread and dip in mixture to saturate, flip it and get the other side too. Repeat for the other slice. Shake off excess, and place in pan to cook. Cook till both sides are nice and crispy brown.
  • 3. Place one slice of toast on plate and generously add some cream cheese and top with some chocolate chips. Add your other slice of toast on top. Now, place your 2 slices of toast in baking dish and into oven/or toaster oven for about 5 minutes till chips are melted. Remove and plate.
  • 4. Add some of the sour cherries on top of toast with several spoonfuls of the sweet liquid. Add your whipped cream, add 3 or 4 Griottines & a tbsp or so of kirsch over top and drizzle your Hershey's chocolate syrup all over french toast. Add a few more chocolate chips...now you are ready to eat the most decadent French Toast you've ever had. Relish every bite!
  • 5. Chocolate ingredients that I used
  • 6. Griottines and I used my sour cherry preserves but you could find them in the store too. Here is my recipe for https://www.justapinch.com/recipes/sauce-spread/jam/sour-cherry-preserves.html?p=1

This recipe was a disappointment. The chocolate and cherries were good, but the French toast was bland.

I followed the recipe exactly and my French toast turned out dry. I think I needed to add more milk to the batter.

This recipe is a bit too sweet for my taste. I think I'll try it again with less sugar next time.

I'm not a huge fan of chocolate, but I still enjoyed this recipe. The cherries and French toast were so good that the chocolate didn't overpower the dish.
