BAKED FISH AU GRATIN image

While not much of a seafood lover, I have been known to eat fish if you disguise the fishy taste enough. This recipe, found in an old cookbook, seems to pass the test. Photo: www.mothersdelite.com.au

Time 45m

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 lb frozen fish fillets (cod, ocean perch, halibut or flounder)
2 Tbsp fine cracker crumbs
1 can(s) (14 oz.) stewed tomatoes
2 Tbsp chopped onion
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp black pepper
1 Tbsp butter
1/4 to 1/2 c cheddar cheese, shredded

Steps:

  • 1. Thaw fillets as directed on package.
  • 2. Grease a 1-qt. shallow baking dish and sprinkle with the cracker crumbs. Lay the fillets on top of crumbs.
  • 3. In a medium bowl, combine tomatoes, onion, salt and pepper. Pour over fillets. Dot with butter and cheese.
  • 4. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 35 minutes, until the fish "flakes" when pierced with a fork.

I'm allergic to fish, so I substituted chicken in this recipe. It turned out great!

This dish is a bit pricey, but it's worth it for a special occasion.

I'm not a fan of the breadcrumb topping. I think it would be better with a Ritz cracker topping.

I would have liked more cheese in the sauce.

Overall, I thought this dish was just okay. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special either.

I thought the fish was a bit overcooked.

This recipe is a bit too complicated for me. I prefer simpler dishes.

I found that the sauce was a bit too thick. Next time, I'll add a little more milk.

I'm not sure what went wrong, but my fish au gratin turned out dry and bland.

This baked fish au gratin is an absolute delight! The combination of tender fish, creamy sauce, and crispy topping is simply divine.
