Number Of Ingredients 14

6 - 8 medium apples(depending on size, peeled and cored
Sugar
Cinnamon
Butter
Pastry:
2 1/4 cup sifted flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup shortening
7 - 8 tablespoons ice water
Syrup:
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
4 tablespoons butter
2 cups water

Steps:

  • Sift flour and salt together. Cut in shortening. Sprinkle water and mix with fork. Roll pastry dough 1/8" thick; cut into circles large enough to cover apples. Place apple in center of dough. Fill cavity with sugar & a little cinnamon. Top with a pat of butter. Fold pastry up to enclose apple and moisten the top of the dough to keep it closed. Place completed apples in greased baking dish. Chill. Heat the oven to 500 degrees. While the apples chill, place all syrup ingredients in a medium saucepan; bring to a boil & boil for three minutes. Allow to cool slightly. Pour warm syrup over chilled dumplings and bake for ten minutes at 500. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake approximately 35 minutes more.
