SALSA CRUDA

Salsa Cruda image

Forget jarred salsa. This simple salsa cruda-a mixture of tomatoes, onions, chiles, and cilantro-tastes amazingly fresh and couldn't be an easier snack or appetizer.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Appetizers

Yield Makes 4 cups

Number Of Ingredients 6

4 medium tomatoes, finely chopped
1/2 large white onion, finely chopped
2 serrano or jalapeno chiles, minced
3/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
1 cup water
Coarse salt

Steps:

  • Stir together tomatoes, onion, chiles, cilantro, water, and 2 1/2 teaspoons salt. Season with more salt to taste.

Tips:

  • Choose the right chili peppers: For a classic chili flavor, use a combination of ancho, guajillo, and pasilla peppers. If you prefer a spicier chili, add some cayenne or habanero peppers.
  • Soak the peppers before using: Soaking the peppers in hot water for at least 30 minutes will help to soften them and release their flavor.
  • Use fresh, ripe tomatoes: Fresh tomatoes add a bright, acidic flavor to chili. If you don't have fresh tomatoes, you can use canned diced tomatoes.
  • Brown the meat well: Browning the meat before adding it to the chili will help to develop its flavor and give the chili a richer color.
  • Use a variety of beans: Different types of beans add different flavors and textures to chili. Try using a combination of kidney beans, black beans, and pinto beans.
  • Add spices and seasonings to taste: Chili is a versatile dish that can be seasoned to your liking. Common spices and seasonings used in chili include chili powder, cumin, oregano, and garlic powder.
  • Simmer the chili for at least 30 minutes: This will allow the flavors to meld and develop.
  • Serve the chili with your favorite toppings: Common toppings for chili include cheese, sour cream, onions, and cilantro.

Conclusion:

With its robust flavors and hearty ingredients, this old-fashioned chili with salsa cruda is sure to be a hit at your next gathering.
