REALLY EASY PORK AND SAUERKRAUT BAKE

Really Easy Pork and Sauerkraut Bake image

I threw this together when I was really craving kraut. It can be really hard to get good kraut in the UK but as I grew up Pennsylvania Dutch sometimes it is hard to ignore the calling of the kraut juice in my veins. This is really easy and reminds me of when my mother would slow cook pork and kraut for New Year's Eve. Using the lean pork steaks actually makes this pretty low fat. It goes well with mashed potatoes.

PORK AND SAUERKRAUT

Pork and Sauerkraut image

Eating sauerkraut on New Year's is an old Pennsylvania Dutch tradition, said to bring good luck. The traditional meal consists of pork and sauerkraut served together, with sauerkraut representing luck and the pig representing rooting into the New Year. It's a feel-good and flavorsome ritual and it may be just what you need to start the New Year. Serve with mashed potatoes or dumplings.

Tips

  • Choose the Right Meat: Select a pork shoulder or butt roast with good marbling for a flavorful and tender result. Alternatively, you can use boneless, skinless pork chops or tenderloin for a leaner option.
  • Enhance Flavor with Seasoning: Rub the pork with a flavorful combination of spices, such as garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. You can also add a teaspoon of caraway seeds for a traditional German touch.
  • Use Quality Sauerkraut: Opt for a good-quality sauerkraut that is not too sour or vinegary. If you find the sauerkraut too sour, rinse it with water before using.
  • Add Vegetables for More Texture: Enhance the dish by adding chopped onions, carrots, and apples for a delightful mix of textures and flavors.
  • Slow-Cook for Tenderness: Cook the pork and sauerkraut in a slow cooker on low for 8-10 hours or until the pork is fall-apart tender. This slow and gentle cooking method allows the flavors to meld and develop fully.
  • Serve with Traditional Sides: Traditionally, pork and sauerkraut is served with mashed potatoes, dumplings, or spätzle. You can also add a side of roasted apples or braised red cabbage for a complete and satisfying meal.

Indulge in the comforting flavors of this classic pork and sauerkraut dish, perfect for a hearty and satisfying meal. With its simple ingredients and straightforward preparation, this recipe is a delight for both cooking enthusiasts and those seeking an effortless culinary experience.
