Rangoon (Basil Gimlet) image

Join the "Goonie" movement! This is my "copycat" recipe from our favorite Thai restaurant here in Eugene. It sounds like an odd combination of ingredient's but "imbiber" beware..... ADDICTIVE! I've served this to more people with raised eyebrows then after the first sip the eyebrows drop and the lips smack with interest and...

Time 3h5m

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 oz fresh squeezed lime juice (approx 1 lrg lime)
2 oz gin (recommended tanqueray)
1 oz lemon grass simple syrup (recipe follows)
6 - 10 *fresh, sweet basil leaves,

Steps:

  • 1. Directions: 1: We have the "PSB lazy way" and 2: The "authentic way" of muddling/mixing. My shoulder doesn't allow me to make multiple Rangoons the "AW" way but I don't think the taste is compromised at all by using the Magic Bullet or a blender and you can easily make multiple drinks in the pitcher and probably get away with a little less Basil. 1) Put all ingredients in a "Magic Bullet" container. Add 3 or 4 cubes of ice and "blitz" 4 or 5 times. Strain into a Martini glass (put a bit of the Basil "mash" into the glass). Garnish with a Basil leaf and lime wedge. OR 2) Fill a cocktail shaker 1/3 full with ice. Add Basil and "muddle" till Basil has been broken into small pieces. Add remaining ingredients and shake. Strain into a martini glass and garnish. The sweetness or tart level of this drink can easily be altered by the amount of Simple Syrup you use. Lemon Grass Simple Syrup: In a large glass bowl or Pyrex 4 cup measuring cup 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup water, I use the hot tap, Stir then microwave on high 2 - 3 minutes, stirring between each minute. Watch closely so as not to boil over. Add 1 ½ - 2 tablespoons of Lemon Grass paste (recommended Gourmet Garden brand- found in the refrigerated produce department) Let it cool on the counter or frig. Pour through a small mesh strainer into a sealable container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
  • 2. NOTES: Shot glass = 1 oz Special Tool: Lime squeezer Small Strainer *The original drink uses Thai Basil but I like it with either. The Thai Basil gives a little different flavor but it's not as tender as the Sweet Basil. This IS NOT a drink served over ice. The ice is merely used to muddle and cool the ingredients.

This fragrant twist on the gimlet cocktail gets its clean green notes not from lime juice but from fresh basil. For extra glamour and aroma, tuck small sprigs of additional basil into each glass.

Yield Makes 6 drinks

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 cup basil lemon syrup
3/4 cup vodka
3/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1 cup ice cubes
Garnish: fresh basil sprigs (preferably lemon basil); lemon zest strips
lemon zest strips

Steps:

  • Stir together all ingredients in a pitcher until cold, then strain into 8- to 10-ounce glasses (such as Old Fashioned) half filled with ice.

Tips:

  • For the Rangoon Basil Gimlet, use fresh basil leaves for the best flavor. If you don't have fresh basil, you can substitute dried basil, but use half the amount.
  • To make the lemongrass syrup, use fresh lemongrass stalks. You can find lemongrass in the produce section of most Asian grocery stores.
  • If you don't have a muddler, you can use the back of a spoon to crush the basil leaves.
  • Be sure to shake the Rangoon Basil Gimlet well before straining it into a glass.
  • Garnish the Rangoon Basil Gimlet with a basil leaf or a lime wedge.

Conclusion:

The Rangoon Basil Gimlet is a refreshing and flavorful cocktail that's perfect for any occasion. It's easy to make and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The lemongrass syrup adds a unique and delicious flavor to the drink, and the basil leaves give it a refreshing twist.
