Steps:
- Peel and wash potatoes. Mix mushroom soup, milk, salt and pepper together in a large bowl. Pour onto prepared potatoes and add the tbsp. of butter or margaring in the middle of baking dish. You may want to spray your pan with PAM first. Just slip into the oven at 350 degrees for about 1 hr. Depending upon the oven, you may want to poke the potatoes just to make sure they are soft. If they are, then your potatoes are ready!!
Tips:
- Choose the Right Potatoes: Select potatoes that are firm and hold their shape well, such as Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes. Avoid using waxy potatoes like Red Potatoes, as they tend to break down and become mushy.
- Slice Potatoes Thinly: Cut the potatoes into thin, even slices to ensure they cook evenly. Using a mandoline or food processor can help achieve uniform slices.
- Layer Potatoes in a Single Layer: Arrange the potato slices in a single layer in the baking dish to prevent overcrowding and ensure even cooking. Overcrowding can result in steamed rather than baked potatoes.
- Season Generously: Don't be shy with the seasonings! Season each layer of potatoes with salt, pepper, and herbs like thyme, rosemary, or parsley. You can also add garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika for extra flavor.
- Use Good Quality Cheese: Opt for flavorful cheeses that melt well, such as cheddar, Gruyère, or Parmesan. Avoid using pre-shredded cheese, as it often contains additives that can affect the taste and texture.
- Bake Until Golden Brown: Keep an eye on the scalloped potatoes in the oven and bake until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork. Overbaking can result in dry, tough potatoes.
Conclusion:
Scalloped potatoes are a classic comfort food that is easy to make and loved by many.
