QUICK AND EASY BAKED ZITI

Quick and Easy Baked Ziti image

This is a quick dish I like to make when I need to get dinner on the table in a hurry. If you like a zestier ziti, use a hot Italian sausage. Note: cooking/prep time does not include time for cooking pasta.

Provided by Bayhill

Categories     One Dish Meal

Time 55m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 lb mild Italian sausage, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 (26 ounce) jar pasta sauce with mushrooms
1 (12 ounce) package ziti pasta or 1 (12 ounce) package penne pasta, cooked and drained according to package directions
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
1/2 cup fresh parmesan cheese, grated

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350ºF. Lightly grease a 9x13" baking dish; set aside.
  • In a large saucepan, cook sausage, onions, green pepper, and garlic over medium heat until sausage is browned; drain fat.
  • Add pasta sauce and cook until mixture is hot, stirring occasionally. Add pasta to the sauce mixture and mix well. Stir in 1 cup of the Mozzarella cheese, mixing until well combined.
  • Pour mixture into the prepared baking dish. Top with remaining 1 cup Mozzarella cheese and the Parmesan cheese. Cover with foil.
  • Bake at 350ºF for 15 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes.

Tips:

  • Choose the right pasta. Short pasta shapes like macaroni, penne, and rotini are ideal for this dish, as they hold the sauce well.
  • Cook the pasta al dente. This means cooking it until it is just tender but still has a slight bite to it. Overcooked pasta will become mushy and won't hold the sauce as well.
  • Use a flavorful sauce. A simple tomato sauce made with fresh tomatoes, garlic, and basil is a great option. You can also use a store-bought sauce, but be sure to choose one that is flavorful and not too watery.
  • Add your favorite toppings. Shredded cheese, crumbled sausage, or chopped vegetables are all great additions to baked pasta. Get creative and experiment with different toppings to find your favorite combination.
  • Bake the pasta until it is bubbly and golden brown. This will take about 20-30 minutes. Be sure to keep an eye on the pasta so that it doesn't overcook.

Conclusion:

Baked pasta is a quick and easy meal that is perfect for busy weeknights. It is also a great way to use up leftover pasta and sauce. With a few simple tips, you can make a delicious and satisfying baked pasta dish that your whole family will love. So next time you are looking for a quick and easy meal, give baked pasta a try!
