Time 1h

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1/2 lb macaroni
1 teaspoon butter, melted
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 cup milk
3 cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs (optional) or 1/3 cup Italian seasoned breadcrumbs (optional)

Steps:

  • Boil macaroni and drain thoroughly. Stir in butter and egg.
  • Mix salt and mustard with 1 tablespoons hot water. Add to milk. Add the cheese, leaving enough to sprinkle on top. Pour into buttered casserole, add milk, sprinkle with cheese.
  • Bake at 350F for about 45 minutes or until custard is set and top is crusty.
  • I like to sprinkle the bread crumbs atop the mac mixture to get a crunchy crust.

Tips:

  • Use a good quality cheese: The type of cheese you use will greatly affect the flavor of your macaroni and cheese. For a classic flavor, use a sharp cheddar cheese. For a more mild flavor, use a mild cheddar or Colby cheese. You can also use a combination of cheeses to create a unique flavor.
  • Cook the macaroni al dente: Macaroni that is cooked al dente will hold its shape and texture better in the macaroni and cheese. To cook macaroni al dente, cook it for about 2 minutes less than the package directions.
  • Make a roux: A roux is a mixture of butter and flour that is used to thicken sauces. Making a roux will help to create a smooth and creamy macaroni and cheese.
  • Use milk or cream: Milk or cream will help to make the macaroni and cheese more moist and creamy. You can use whole milk, low-fat milk, or even heavy cream. The type of milk or cream you use will affect the richness of the macaroni and cheese.
  • Season to taste: Macaroni and cheese should be seasoned to taste with salt and pepper. You can also add other seasonings, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika, to taste.

Conclusion:

President Reagan's favorite macaroni and cheese is a classic comfort food that is easy to make and loved by people of all ages. By following these tips, you can make a macaroni and cheese that is creamy, cheesy, and delicious.
