Best 8 Pork Chops With Onion Compote Recipes

facebook share image   twitter share image   pinterest share image   E-Mail share image

Pork chops with onion compote is a classic dish that is both flavorful and easy to make. The pork chops are seasoned with a simple blend of salt, pepper, and garlic powder, then pan-fried until golden brown. The onion compote is made with sliced onions that are caramelized in butter until they are soft and sweet. The two components are then served together, with the compote spooned over the pork chops. This dish is a great option for a weeknight meal, as it can be prepared in under an hour. It is also versatile and can be served with a variety of sides, such as mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a simple green salad.

In addition to the classic pork chops with onion compote recipe, the article also includes two variations:

* **Pork Chops with Apple Compote:** This variation uses apples instead of onions in the compote. The apples add a slightly sweet and tart flavor to the dish.
* **Pork Chops with Cranberry Compote:** This variation uses cranberries instead of onions in the compote. The cranberries add a bright and festive flavor to the dish.

Both of these variations are just as easy to make as the classic recipe, and they offer a delicious and unique twist on this classic dish.

PORK CHOPS SMOTHERED IN ONION GRAVY

Pork Chops Smothered in Onion Gravy image

This recipe calls for 4 pork chops because that's about what you can fit into a standard frying pan, though I've squeezed 6 smaller chops in before. I recommend you double the recipe because my husband eats them two at a time. Serve the smothered pork chops over cooked rice with your favorite vegetable side dish and cornbread.

Categories     Main Dish Recipes     Pork     Pork Chop Recipes     Braised

Time 1h40m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 teaspoons seasoned salt
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
4 pork chops, 3/4-inch thick, or more to taste
½ cup self-rising flour
¼ cup vegetable oil
1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms, or more to taste
1 teaspoon water, or as needed
2 cups water

Steps:

  • Mix seasoned salt, garlic powder, black pepper, and paprika together in a bowl; rub about 3/4 teaspoon spice mixture onto each pork chop. Thoroughly coat each pork chop with flour, saving remaining seasoning and flour for the gravy.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a heavy skillet over medium-high heat; cook pork chops in the hot oil until browned, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer pork chops to a plate, retaining drippings in the pan. Cover pork chops with paper towels.
  • Cook and stir onion in the drippings in the heavy skillet over medium heat until browned, 5 to 10 minutes. Add mushrooms, remaining flour, remaining spice mixture, and about 1 teaspoon water if needed to moisten; cook and stir until onion is golden brown, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir 2 cups water into onion-mushroom mixture until gravy is smooth; bring to a boil. Place pork chops in the gravy, reduce heat, cover skillet, and simmer until pork chops are tender, about 1 hour. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 145 degrees F (63 degrees C).

PORK CHOPS WITH APPLES AND ONIONS

Pork Chops with Apples and Onions image

Sauteed apples and onion combine with pork chops for a tastiness that never disappoints.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Ingredients     Meat & Poultry     Pork Recipes

Number Of Ingredients 7

6 bone-in pork chops (loin or shoulder), cut 3/4 inch thick
Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil or vegetable oil
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 large white onion, sliced
2 to 3 apples, cored and sliced (about 3 cups)
1 cup beer, white wine, cider, or chicken broth

Steps:

  • Trim the chops of excess fat. Sprinkle generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Heat a 14-inch cast-iron skillet (if you have a smaller one, you'll need to work in batches) over high heat, and then swirl in the olive oil. Lay in the pork chops and don't move them for a few minutes, to assure a good golden sear forms. Turn and brown well on the second side for a total of about 10 minutes. Transfer the chops to a warm plate.
  • Swirl the butter into the pan. Add the onion and apples. Saute until the onion slices are lightly caramelized and the apples have begun to soften, about 8 minutes. Stir in the beer or other liquid. Return chops to the pan.
  • Cook until the pork is tender, about 15 more minutes (depending on the size of the chops), turning halfway through and covering the chops with the apple mixture. If the apple mixture needs a little thickening, transfer the chops to the warm plate again and simmer the mixture on high for a few minutes to reduce. Serve the chops over rice or mashed potatoes with a large spoonful of the apple-onion mixture over the top.

Tips:

  • To ensure the pork chops are cooked evenly, use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. The chops should be cooked to an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C) for medium-rare, 155°F (68°C) for medium, or 165°F (74°C) for well-done.
  • If you don't have a meat thermometer, you can check the doneness of the pork chops by cutting into one of them. The meat should be opaque throughout, with no pink in the center.
  • To make the onion compote ahead of time, simply cook it according to the recipe and then let it cool completely. Store the compote in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • When reheating the onion compote, be sure to do so gently over low heat. This will help prevent the compote from burning or sticking to the pan.
  • Serve the pork chops with the onion compote spooned over top. You can also garnish the chops with fresh herbs, such as parsley or chives.

Conclusion:

Pork chops with onion compote is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. The pork chops are juicy and flavorful, and the onion compote is sweet and tangy. This dish is sure to please everyone at the table.
