Time 20m

Yield 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

1/2 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup mascarpone cheese, at room temperature
1/4 cup espresso or very strong coffee
2 teaspoons dark rum or marsala
6 savoiardi biscuits or ladyfingers
One 1-ounce piece semisweet chocolate
Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting

Steps:

  • Combine the cream, sugar and vanilla in a bowl and beat until stiff peaks form. Beat in the mascarpone.
  • Combine the espresso and rum in a shallow bowl.
  • Break the ladyfingers into thirds to make 18 pieces. To build the first tiramisu, quickly dip 2 pieces in the coffee mixture, then place in the bottom of a small glass.
  • Spoon a heaping tablespoon of the mascarpone mixture on top. With a rasp or the smallest holes on a box grater, grate a fine layer of the chocolate over the mascarpone mixture. Repeat 2 more times to fill the glass, then repeat the whole process for the second tiramisu.

Time 20m

Yield 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup hot espresso or strong brewed coffee
1 tablespoon rum
2 teaspoons granulated sugar
1/3 cup mascarpone cheese
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
6 lady fingers (each cookie measuring about 4 1/2 by 1 inch)

Steps:

  • Sift about 1/3 of the cocoa powder into the serving glasses, dividing it equally between the two.
  • Combine the espresso, rum and granulated sugar in a small, wide bowl and stir until the sugar dissolves. (Make sure your espresso is hot, which will help the sugar dissolve.)
  • Beat the mascarpone cheese, heavy cream, confectioners' sugar and vanilla together in a large bowl until soft peaks form. Set the mascarpone cream aside.
  • Break a lady finger in half so that the two halves will fit snugly into your serving glass. Dip both sides of the halves into the espresso mixture. (Don't linger in the espresso-the delicate lady fingers will disintegrate!)
  • Place the lady finger pieces, hump-side up, in a layer in the serving glass. About two halves will fit in each layer. Top with about 2 tablespoons of the mascarpone cream and spread in an even layer. Sift in half of the remaining cocoa powder. Repeat the dipping and layering of the lady fingers and dolloping with the mascarpone cream until you reach the top of the serving glasses, finishing with the cream.
  • Dust the remaining cocoa powder on top of each glass in an even layer. Refrigerate until ready to enjoy and serve chilled.

Tips:

  • Use a good quality coffee for the best flavor. A dark roast coffee will give you a more intense flavor than a light roast coffee.
  • Make sure the ladyfingers are soaked in the coffee mixture for long enough so that they are soft and pliable. If they are too dry, they will be difficult to eat.
  • Don't overbeat the whipped cream. If you overbeat it, it will become grainy and lose its smooth texture.
  • Chill the tiramisu for at least 4 hours before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld together and the tiramisu to set.
  • Garnish the tiramisu with cocoa powder or grated chocolate before serving. This will add a touch of elegance and make it even more delicious.

Conclusion:

This poor woman's tiramisu is a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It is made with simple ingredients that are readily available, and it can be prepared in just a few minutes. The combination of coffee, ladyfingers, and whipped cream is irresistible, and the addition of chocolate makes it even more decadent. Whether you are serving it to guests or enjoying it yourself, this tiramisu is sure to be a hit.
