HOMEMADE PIZZA SAUCE

Homemade Pizza Sauce image

For years, I had trouble finding a pizza sauce recipe my family liked, so I started making my own. The evening I served it to company and they asked for my recipe, I knew I'd finally got it right! When I prepare my sauce, I usually fix enough for three to four pizzas and freeze it. Feel free to spice up the sauce to suit your own family's tastes. -Cheryl Kravik, Spanaway, Washington

I made this fennel and sausage pizza one night and it was the best pizza we have had in a long time. You can adjust the amount of toppings and sauce and cheese to your preference. For the dough, I like Jay's Signature Crust from this site.

  • Roast the fennel: Roasting the fennel brings out its sweetness and mellows its flavor. You can roast the fennel whole or sliced.
  • Use a good quality olive oil: The olive oil you use will make a big difference in the taste of your sauce. Use a high-quality extra virgin olive oil that has a fruity flavor.
  • Simmer the sauce for at least 30 minutes: Simmering the sauce allows the flavors to meld and develop. The longer you simmer the sauce, the better it will taste.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasonings: Before serving, taste the sauce and adjust the seasonings to your liking. You may need to add more salt, pepper, or herbs.
  • Use the sauce on your favorite pizza: This sauce is great on any type of pizza. You can use it on a classic Margherita pizza, a pepperoni pizza, or a vegetable pizza.
