Time 23m

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 cups quick-cooking oats, (use certified gluten free for gluten free crust)
½ cup unsalted butter, (melted)
½ cup powdered sugar
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350ºF.
  • Place the oats, melted butter, powdered sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a food processor. Blend until well combined and the oats clump together, about 20-30 seconds.
  • Press firmly on the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie dish. Tip: To make the crust come all the way up the sides, press evenly on the bottom to work the excess crust up the sides.
  • For a fully baked pie crust, bake for 18 minutes, or until oats are set. If the crust puffs up during baking, use a measuring cup to flatten gently immediately when it comes out of the oven. Cool completely before filling.
  • To fill with an unbaked filling, bake for 5 minutes before filling. Bake according to pie instructions, but for best results, bake the pie on the lowest oven rack.

Apple Pie Oatmeal with Bruleed Crust image

Provided by Bobby Flay

Time 27m

Yield 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons light brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup dried cranberries
Pinch salt
1 large Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored and cut into medium dice
2 3/4 cups whole milk
1 cup quick cooking Irish oatmeal (recommended: McCann's)
1 teaspoon freshly grated orange zest
Pinch salt
2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Steps:

  • For the apples and cranberries: Combine the water, sugar, cinnamon, cranberries, and salt in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Cook until the sugar is completely dissolved, about 1 minute.
  • Add the apples, reduce the heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft but still retain some of their shape and the mixture has thickened, about 10 minutes. Set aside while you make the oatmeal.
  • For the oatmeal: Preheat the broiler. Put the milk in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Stir in the oatmeal, orange zest, and salt and cook until the mixture thickens, about 2 minutes. Cover and let sit for 2 minutes. The oatmeal should be slightly loose, it will continue to thicken under the broiler.
  • Divide half of the apple mixture between 2 10-ounce ramekins. Divide half of the oatmeal between the 2 ramekins and spoon on top of the apple mixture. Place the remaining apple mixture on top of the oatmeal then top the apple mixture with the remaining oatmeal. Smooth out the top of the oatmeal and sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the sugar evenly over the top of each.
  • Place the ramekins on a baking sheet and place until the broiler. Broil until the sugar is golden brown and bubbly and completely melted, about 2 minutes. Remove from the oven and let rest a few minutes before serving.

OATMEAL NUT PIE CRUST

Oatmeal Nut Pie Crust image

I just found this recipe in an old band bosters cookbook and placing it here for sharing and later use. The recipe mentions that it is a good substitute for graham cracker crust. It sounds good to me and might be a good alternative for cream pies or maybe even dutch apple or cherry.

Provided by MI Mitten

Categories     Dessert

Time 15m

Yield 1 9inch pie

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 cup rolled oats
4 tablespoons brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup melted butter
2/3 cup finely minced walnuts

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350F.
  • Toast oatmeal in a shallow pan for 10 minutes to brown, watch carefully.
  • Remove from oven and in small mixing bowl combine oatmeal with remaining ingredients.
  • Press into 9-inch pie plate.
  • Fill with desired filling and bake or bake crust empty for later use.

Tips:

  • Use the right type of oatmeal: Old-fashioned rolled oats are the best type of oatmeal to use for pie crust. They have a chewy texture that holds the crust together well.
  • Grind the oats into a fine flour: To get the best results, grind the oats into a fine flour before using them. This will help the crust to be smooth and evenly textured.
  • Use cold butter: Cold butter is essential for making a flaky pie crust. When the butter is cold, it will stay in small pieces as it bakes, creating pockets of steam that will help the crust to rise.
  • Work quickly: Pie dough is best when it is made quickly and efficiently. The more you handle it, the tougher it will become. So, work quickly to get the dough into the pie plate and into the oven.
  • Chill the dough before baking: Chilling the dough before baking will help it to hold its shape and prevent it from shrinking. You can chill the dough for at least 30 minutes or up to overnight.

Conclusion:

Oatmeal pie crust is a delicious and healthy alternative to traditional pie crust. It is easy to make and can be used for a variety of pies and tarts. The oats add a nutty flavor and a chewy texture to the crust. With a few simple tips, you can make a perfect oatmeal pie crust every time.
