My aunt has been making this wonderful bread for years. You can make it ahead and serve it cold. It makes a great appetizer, and is wonderful left over. It also travels well, and is a hit at pot-lucks!

4 cups white bread flour
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons fast rise yeast or 3 teaspoons active dry yeast

  • Let cool.
  • Hollow out cooled bread like a pumpkin, reserving"lid" to put back on.

  • Replace lid and wrap in heavy duty foil, then news paper, then foil again.
  • Bread and chicken will stay warm all day!
  • Success Hints: Use to make edible soup bowls.

Tips for Making Picnic Basket Bread:

  • Use high-quality ingredients: The better the ingredients, the better the bread will be. Use fresh, organic ingredients whenever possible.
  • Knead the dough properly: Kneading the dough develops the gluten, which gives the bread its structure and chewiness. Knead the dough for at least 5 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place: The dough needs time to rise in order to develop its flavor and texture. Place the dough in a warm place, such as a turned-off oven, for about an hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  • Bake the bread at a high temperature: Baking the bread at a high temperature creates a crispy crust and a soft, chewy interior. Bake the bread at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 30-35 minutes, or until it is golden brown.
  • Let the bread cool before slicing: Let the bread cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing. This will help to prevent the bread from crumbling.

Conclusion:

Picnic basket bread is a delicious and versatile bread that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be customized to your liking. With a little planning, you can make a picnic basket bread that is sure to impress your friends and family.
