Time 5m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 cup fresh lime juice (about 9-10 limes worth)
1/2 cup fresh mint leaves
1/2 cup simple syrup, add more to taste as desired (see cook's note above)
3/4 cup white or light rum, add more to taste as desired
ice
club soda

Steps:

  • Combine the mint and the lime juice in a small pitcher. Use a muddler to crush the mint in the lime juice, this should take a minute or two. Add the simple syrup and rum to the pitcher. Fill the pitcher about 2/3 of the way to the top with ice and stir well to mix and chill.
  • Fill individual glasses halfway with ice, then 2/3 of the way full with the mojito mixture, then top each glass with club soda. Enjoy!

THE REAL MOJITO

The Real Mojito image

This is an authentic recipe for mojito. I sized the recipe for one serving, but you can adjust it accordingly and make a pitcher full. It's a very refreshing drink for hot summer days. Be careful when drinking it, however. If you make a pitcher you might be tempted to drink the whole thing yourself, and you just might find yourself talking Spanish in no time! Tonic water can be substituted instead of the soda water but the taste is different and somewhat bitter.

2 tablespoons white sugar, or to taste

  • Place mint leaves and 1 lime wedge into a sturdy glass. Use a muddler to crush the mint and lime to release the mint oils and lime juice. Add 2 more lime wedges and the sugar, and muddle again to release the lime juice. Do not strain the mixture. Fill the glass almost to the top with ice. Pour the rum over the ice, and fill the glass with carbonated water. Stir, taste, and add more sugar if desired. Garnish with the remaining lime wedge.

THE PERFECT MOJITO

The Perfect Mojito image

Warning: if you try this recipe, you'll never again trust a bartender to mix your mojito. I was fed up with mediocre bar mojitos, and decided to learn to make a traditional one myself. After much research, I think I've arrived at perfection. Try it for yourself! Notes: Real sugar cane syrup really does make a difference. Any good liquor store will have it. Use mineral water with a high effervescence, like Perrier. You want a bit of texture to your mojito to balance the sweetness.

Tips:

  • Use fresh limes: Fresh limes provide the best flavor for a mojito. If you can't find fresh limes, you can use bottled lime juice, but the flavor will not be as good.
  • Use white rum: White rum is the traditional rum used in a mojito. It has a light, clean flavor that allows the other ingredients to shine through. If you don't have white rum, you can use another light rum, such as silver or gold rum.
  • Use simple syrup: Simple syrup is a mixture of sugar and water that is used to sweeten the mojito. You can make your own simple syrup by dissolving 1 cup of sugar in 1 cup of boiling water. Or you can buy pre-made simple syrup at the store.
  • Muddle the limes and mint: Muddling the limes and mint releases their flavors and oils, which gives the mojito its characteristic flavor. To muddle the limes and mint, place them in a glass and use a muddler to press down on them until they are fragrant and slightly crushed.
  • Add the rum, simple syrup, and soda water: Once the limes and mint are muddled, add the rum, simple syrup, and soda water to the glass. Stir to combine.
  • Garnish with a lime wedge and a sprig of mint: Garnish the mojito with a lime wedge and a sprig of mint for a festive touch.

Conclusion:

The mojito is a refreshing and flavorful cocktail that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be customized to your own taste. Whether you like it sweet, sour, or somewhere in between, there is a mojito recipe for you. So next time you are looking for a delicious and refreshing cocktail, give the mojito a try. You won't be disappointed!
