Cheese really stars in this lighter lasagna, which I created a few years ago. It can be prepared ahead of time and baked later. I sometimes make up a couple batches and freeze them in case company drops by. -Janet Myers, Napanee, Ontario

THE PERFECT LASAGNA

The Perfect Lasagna image

This is the best lasagna I have ever had. A friend taught me by cooking it with me. I've guessed at the actual amounts used, so feel free to do your own amending.

Provided by Ennui on Rice

Categories     One Dish Meal

Time 1h

Yield 2-3 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 19

1 lb ground beef
5 slices bacon
6 ounces stewed tomatoes
1 onion
2 garlic cloves
1 green pepper
6 mushrooms
7 olives
6 sun-dried tomatoes
red wine
balsamic vinegar
salt
pepper
oregano
2 cups milk
1 -2 cup flour
3 -4 tablespoons parmesan cheese
mozzarella cheese
lasagna sheet

Steps:

  • Chop the onion, garlic, mushrooms, bacon, olives and sun dried tomatoes before you start to cook.
  • Cook the onions and garlic first.
  • Add the beef and brown about half-way through.
  • Add green pepper, mushroom, olives, sun-dried tomatoes and bacon.
  • Add the stewed tomatoes. Cut them apart with the spatula or a knife as you add them.
  • Add as much red wine and balsamic vinegar as you wish. (I think the secret of the lasagna is in the wine and vinegar though, so I add about 3 tablespoons and a 1/4 of a cup).
  • Add salt, pepper, and oregano to taste.
  • Let the sauce stew as long as needed (the longer the better).
  • Meanwhile, heat the milk gently in a saucepan.
  • Add the flour gradually, stirring constantly. Add the parmesan cheese to the sauce as well.
  • When the white sauce is thicker than pancake mix (about 10 minutes), remove from heat.
  • In an 8x8 or round lasagna dish, layer like this: meat layer, lasagna sheet, white sauce.
  • Finish with a white sauce layer and cover with mozzarella cheese.
  • Cook at 350 for about 20 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly.

Tips:

  • Use fresh ingredients: The better the quality of your ingredients, the better your lasagna will taste. Look for fresh herbs, vegetables, and cheeses.
  • Don't overcook the pasta sheets: They should be al dente, or slightly firm to the bite. Overcooked pasta sheets will become mushy and ruin the texture of your lasagna.
  • Use a good quality cheese blend: A combination of mozzarella, Parmesan, ricotta, and Asiago cheeses is a classic choice for lasagna. You can also experiment with other cheeses, such as Fontina, Gruyère, or Provolone.
  • Don't skimp on the sauce: The sauce is what brings all the flavors of lasagna together. Make sure to use a flavorful sauce that you enjoy. You can use a simple tomato sauce, or you can get creative and try a different type of sauce, such as a white sauce or a pesto sauce.
  • Let the lasagna rest before serving: This will allow the flavors to meld together and the lasagna to set. Letting the lasagna rest for at least 30 minutes before serving will also make it easier to slice.

Conclusion:

Lasagna is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With a little planning and preparation, you can easily make a perfect four-cheese lasagna at home. So next time you're looking for a special meal to make, give this recipe a try. You won't be disappointed!
