PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH APPLE CRUMB PIE

Pennsylvania Dutch Apple Crumb Pie image

From my falling apart cookbook entitled Best-Loved Pennsylvania Dutch Recipes. Simple ingredients, easy assembly and spectacular presentation. When pressed for time, I have been known to substitute canned apple pie filling. This also works well for Cherry Crumb Pie by using canned cherry filling plus 1/4 teaspoon almond extract. A lifetime ago, on holidays, I was not allowed to enter my ex-inlaws house unless I had a Cherry Crumb Pie in my hands! ;) NOTE: If you use canned filling, just bake for 45 minutes at 350 degrees or until topping is brown.

Tips:

  • Use firm, ripe apples: This will help the apple butter have a good texture and flavor.
  • Peel and core the apples: This will help remove any unwanted parts of the apples and make the apple butter smoother.
  • Cook the apples slowly: This will help the apples break down and release their natural sugars.
  • Stir the apple butter frequently: This will help prevent the apple butter from sticking to the bottom of the pot and burning.
  • Add spices to taste: Common spices used in apple butter include cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  • Can the apple butter: This will help preserve the apple butter for up to a year.

Conclusion:

Apple butter is a delicious and versatile spread that can be enjoyed in many different ways. It can be spread on toast, pancakes, or waffles, used as a filling for pies and pastries, or even added to yogurt or oatmeal. Apple butter is also a great way to use up extra apples, and it makes a wonderful gift for friends and family. With its sweet and tangy flavor, apple butter is a surefire hit that everyone will love.
