Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 5

4 D'Anjou pears (aka Anjou pears)
1/2 cup (120ml) pure maple syrup
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
optional toppings: maple almond granola, Greek yogurt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). I don't line my baking sheet when I make these, but you absolutely can with parchment or a silicone baking mat.
  • Cut pears in half, then cut a small sliver off the underside so the pears sit flat when placed upright on the baking sheet. See video above for visual. Using a large or medium cookie scoop or melon baller (or even a teaspoon), core out the seeds. Arrange pears, facing up, on the baking sheet. Sprinkle evenly with cinnamon- feel free to add more cinnamon if you'd like.
  • Whisk the maple syrup and vanilla extract together in a small bowl. Drizzle most of it all over the pears, reserving about 2 Tablespoons for after the pears are finished baking.
  • Bake pears for about 25 minutes until soft and lightly browned on the edges. Remove from the oven and immediately drizzle with remaining maple syrup mixture. Serve warm with granola and yogurt. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Time 20m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 to 2 tablespoons Calvados or Apple Jack, optional
2 firm cooking apples, such as Golden Delicious, Macoun, Cortland, or Gravenstien
2 ripe pears, such as Anjou, Bartlett, or Comice
1 lemon
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 tablespoons sugar
1 (3-inch) cinnamon stick or vanilla bean, split lengthwise

Steps:

  • Peel, halve and core, both the apples and pears. Cut each 1/2 into 4 wedges and transfer to a medium bowl. Halve the lemon and squeeze the juice over the fruit, toss lightly.
  • Melt the butter in a skillet over high heat. Add the sugar, and cook until the sugar begins to caramelize. Add the fruit the caramel may seize (harden) don't be alarmed. Add the cinnamon stick or vanilla, and cook, stirring, until the caramel melts, and the fruit is juicy, about 7 minutes.
  • If adding the Calvados, remove the pan from the heat before adding the alcohol. Return the pan to the heat. To flambe the alcohol on a gas burner, carefully tip the pan toward the flame; and on an electric element hold a long match at the inside edge of the pan until it ignites. Swirl the pan over the heat until the flame subsides. Serve fruit, warm, over ice cream with cookies.

  • Serving suggestion: Vanilla Ice cream and gingerbread cookies.

Tips:

  • Choose ripe but firm pears: Pears that are too ripe will be too soft and mushy after poaching, while unripe pears will be too hard. Look for pears that have a slight give when you press them gently.
  • Use a variety of pears: Different varieties of pears have different flavors and textures, so using a mix of varieties will give your glazed pears a more complex flavor.
  • Poach the pears in a flavorful liquid: The poaching liquid is what will give the pears their flavor, so use a liquid that you enjoy the taste of. Some good options include water, white wine, red wine, apple cider, or even cranberry juice.
  • Add spices and herbs to the poaching liquid: Spices and herbs can add a lot of flavor to the glazed pears. Some good options include cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, star anise, cardamom, vanilla bean, and fresh thyme or rosemary.
  • Reduce the poaching liquid: Once the pears are poached, reduce the poaching liquid until it is thick and syrupy. This will make a delicious glaze for the pears.
  • Serve the pears warm or cold: Glazed pears can be served warm or cold. If you are serving them warm, you can drizzle them with the warm glaze. If you are serving them cold, you can chill them in the refrigerator for a few hours or overnight.

Conclusion:

Glazed pears are a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They are perfect for a special occasion or a simple weeknight treat. With a few simple tips, you can make glazed pears that are sure to impress your friends and family.
